Eric and Jean McArthur at Riversdale Beach, Wairarapa. This is a fine photo I used for am call card and had it overprinted. I was lucky with the light and Toe-Toe grass (say "Toy-Toy") in bloom. This was on a coastal cruise we enjoyed in 2001. Eric and Jean on Punakaikemotel Beach. Jean looking out to the Kaikoura mountains in January. A Combined Clan Gathering at Raglan near Hamilton , North Island , New Zealand. This was 27th October 2001.
Reinga Light House. Located on the Norternmost point of New Zealand. The sign over the Reinga Lighthouse door reads... Postcard from Wairarapa and Castle Point. Kirking 2003 MacArthur luncheon
There is a pass between Wairarapa (an agrilcultural plain with a large lake)[our home, Carterton is about 10 minutes away] and Wellington. Originally, the railway required a third rail with a cog belt system, used for traction/braking up and down the steeps. There is no need now, so there is an historic museum nearby, "The Fell Engine Musuem." This museum has the engine and carriages and many detailed photos and displays. From Left to right :

Eric was born in 1928 in Edinburgh,
Scotland. He attended school at Daniel Stewart's College in
Edinburgh. Later, he attended Salford Technical College,
then finally studied medicine at Owen's College, Victoria
University, Manchester, England. In 1953, he became House
Surgeon in the university's department of surgery. Here, he
meet his future wife, Jean Oldham, who also studied
medicine. In 1953, Eric was commissioned into the R.A.M.C.
In 1955, twin sons, Alastair and Ian were born in Cuckfield,
near Lewes. Both sons eventually earned medical degrees and
are now in active practice in New Zealand and Nova Scotia.
Drs. Eric and Jean retired from medical practice in 1987 and
left England in 1993 for New Zealand. They now live in Carterton,
nestled in the Wairarapa Plain, 90 Kms. northeast of Wellington. |
