Eric was born in 1928 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He attended school at Daniel Stewart's College in Edinburgh. Later, he attended Salford Technical College, then finally studied medicine at Owen's College, Victoria University, Manchester, England. In 1953, he became House Surgeon in the university's department of surgery. Here, he meet his future wife, Jean Oldham, who also studied medicine. In 1953, Eric was commissioned into the R.A.M.C. In 1955, twin sons, Alastair and Ian were born in Cuckfield, near Lewes. Both sons eventually earned medical degrees and are now in active practice in New Zealand and Nova Scotia. Drs. Eric and Jean retired from medical practice in 1987 and left England in 1993 for New Zealand. They now live in Carterton, nestled in the Wairarapa Plain, 90 Kms. northeast of Wellington.
